Summer brings hot weather and sweaty days. And sometimes, the best way to cool off is to grab some delicious and cool ice cream. Fortunately, Riverhead, NY, is home to several fantastic ice cream shops that are sure to make your summer better. Star Confectionery, Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices, and Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe are three local favorites. Stay cool at one of these ice cream shops this summer.

Star Confectionery

This family-owned shop started in 1920 and continues to serve hometown favorite breakfasts and lunches. When the temperatures heat up, you can finish your meal with homemade ice cream. In fact, you might feel like you’ve taken a step back in time while digging into a traditional ice cream sundae. Or, if a few scoops aren’t your thing, try a creamy milkshake instead.

When you go to Star Confectionary, bring your cash — they don’t take credit or debit. You’ll love the welcoming, friendly atmosphere that envelops you once you walk in the door. In addition, check the hours before you go. This old-fashioned eatery is closed on Mondays. Instead, plan to go Tuesday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. On Sundays, they are only open for breakfast.

Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices & Ice Cream

Your biggest problem at Ralph’s will be trying to choose from their huge menu of ices, ice creams, drinks, and more. Since 1928 Ralph’s has been offering delicious frozen treats. Now, from that single shop, Ralph’s has expanded all over the East coast. And although Ralph’s signature treats are the Italian ices, many people also know them for their Doughnados. Edible cookie dough and ice cream come together in a perfect combination. Choose from Birthday Cake, Chocolate Chunk, Peanut Butter, and Triple Chocolate Brownie.

Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe

Another Riverhead anchor, Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe, is a hometown destination serving cones, shakes, sundaes, and cakes. Customize your ice cream sundae with one of more than a dozen toppings, including homemade hot fudge. And if a sweet treat at the shoppe isn’t enough, ask for some hand-packed ice cream to take home. In addition, Snowflake crafts novelty treats that you can take home for a family member or yourself. And don’t forget your best fur friend — treat your dog to a Muttwich featuring vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two Milkbone treats.

If you know someone with a summer birthday, they’re sure to love a handmade cake from Snowflake. They make most of the cakes daily, but if you want to customize a cake, you can order ahead. Finally, head to Snowflake whenever the craving hits — they’re open daily. Sunday through Thursday, you can beat the heat with ice cream from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. And on Friday and Saturday nights, you get an extra hour.

With so many ice cream options in town, you might find yourself looking forward to the hot weather. It makes a great excuse for treating yourself!
